Former prime minister of Sudan

Sadiq al-Mahdi is a Sudanese politician and thinker, an imam of the Ansar sect and President of the National Umma Party in Sudan. He began his career by joining the Ministry of Finance before he became the Director of the Farming Section of the Mahdist Property Directorate and a member of its board of directors. He became active in the Sudanese opposition, working against the Abboud-led military regime. Al-Mahdi also headed the Sudanese opposition’s United National Front from 1961 to 1964 and 1972 to 1977. He was elected twice as President of the National Umma Party; in 1964 and later in 1986.
