He was the legal representative of Sudan in the border dispute over Abyei at the International Arbitration Court. He served as rapporteur of the commission for constitutional amendment that drafted the Sudanese constitution in 2005. Ahmed was also an ambassador and a member of the Sudanese delegation that negotiated the agreement on South Sudan's right for self-determination. His research interests include international law, human rights law and international criminal law. He has recently published a book entitled African Borders and Secession in International Law.
