He previously taught at Johns Hopkins University, Georgetown University, George Washington University, George Mason University and Durham University. His research focuses on comparative politics, democratisation, religion and politics, Islamist movements and Egyptian and Arab politics. He has published several books including Inside the Muslim Brotherhood: Religion, Identity, and Politics; Elections and Democratization in the Middle East and The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt: Gerontocracy Fighting against Time. Al-Anani has published policy papers in leading newspapers including The Washington Post, Foreign Affairs and Foreign Policy.
