Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies at the Russian Academy of Sciences
He is a political adviser to the UN envoy to Syria. He specialises in the history of Arab countries and has published several research papers on Arab and Islamic affairs. He served as a visiting professor in Arab and international universities including the University of California- Berkeley and the American University in Cairo. Naumkin is a member of the Academic Council in the Russian Foreign Ministry and the Academic Advisory Council in the Russian Ministry of Justice.
