He is also an author, broadcaster and human rights activist. In 1984, he joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office as Second Secretary at the British High Commission in Lagos. In 1990, he led the FCO Section of the Embargo Surveillance Centre before moving to the Cyprus Section. Murray also served as First Secretary at the British Embassy in Warsaw, then as Deputy Head of Africa Department. In 1998, he became Deputy High Commissioner at the West Africa Branch and then Ambassador to Uzbekistan in 2002.
